Exploits Canyon Adventure

Experience the biggest whitewater on the island as you raft through the stunning and unique Exploits River Canyon. This two hour whitewater rafting adventure will provide you with non-stop adventure from start to finish. No experience and no swimming ability is required, but you must be comfortable in the water as it is possible that you could fall out of the raft into the rapids.

Important Note: Accessing the river in the Exploits Canyon involves descending rock carved stairs and crossing un-even terrain. Not possible for guests with mobility limitations, knee or hip issues.  Run is not appropriate for guests with serious medical conditions or back injuries.  Please call us for details.  Our Badger Chute adventures are much more accessible.

Trip Details

Our Exploits Canyon adventures begin at our renovated bus-office in the parking lot of the Salmonid Interpretation Centre - don't drive to Riverfront Chalets!  On the map below, you're looking for the "Exploits Canyon Office".

Okay, so you passed the first challenge and you found the bus-office!  Great, so come on in and get registered!  Your guides will welcome you and get you geared up for your adventure with a helmet, PFD, and optional wetsuit (no additional charge).  Once you're geared up we'll board our Canyon Bus "Timmy" for a short drive down to "Danger Cove" where your guides will lead you through a detailed safety briefing as we lower the rafts down to the Canyon floor by zipline.  Unfortunately this zipline is only safe for the rafts, so instead you have a steep rock-cut staircase to navigate to get down to the river.  The stairs are no problem for anyone who is roughly adult-sized without mobility issues.  For smaller youth and those with mobility issues, you would be much better off on the Badger Chute.

Once you make it down to the river you will be treated to a truly spectacular sight!  The "Grotto" is a calm pool fed by waterfalls and surrounded by 25m (82') red rock cliffs on all sides - you won't believe that you're still in the heart of Grand Falls-Windsor!  When the river levels are right, we'll start off our adventure by paddling over to one of the waterfalls so you can actually stand underneath it!  Careful as you walk over as the salmon are everywhere!  You may even see one jump up the falls while you're getting your picture taken!

Okay, well this has all been fun, but it's time for some action!  Before leaving the Grotto your guide will direct you in some advanced rafting and rescue techniques to make sure that you are prepared for the adventure to come.  When your team is ready, you'll proceed downstream for 2km (1.25 miles) of non-stop excitement!  Starting with a massive hit on "Paul's Falls" and then flying down through the epic "Mill Rapids" (named for the former pulp & paper mill).  The Mill Rapids frequently have swells up to 3m (10') and they provide a ride you will never forget!  One of the coolest features of the Mill Rapids is a largest recirculating current that allows us to float upstream and re-enter the rapids for another round!  Just imagine the thrill of moving from standing water into fast moving raging whitewater!  Roller coasters have nothing on this!  We'll keep hitting the Mill Rapids again and again until you've had your fill before continuing down stream.

Immediately after leaving the Mill Rapids we float through a short calm section underneath the iconic "Mill Bridge" 25m (82') above... don't be fooled into a false sense of calm though as the rumble of the "Canyon Rapid" will soon be all you hear!  Just before taking on the "Canyon Rapid" we have the opportunity to play around in two fun surfing waves the "Blow Hole" and "Happy Ending" while our photographer captures all the action from "Whale Rock".

After what has already been an amazingly exciting adventure it's time to kick things up another notch as we drift inexorably towards the namesake "Exploits Canyon Rapid".  The Exploits River is 400m (437yds) wide at our take-out location in Gorge Park, but here at the "Exploits Canyon Rapid" the river is compressed to just 25m (82').  So all that water is squeezed through this tiny canyon... you know what happens when you pinch a hose, right?  Same idea!  This compression creates unbelievable force and the biggest commercial rapids in Atlantic Canada!  The rapids can create swells towering 3.5m (12') and they come from all sides as you fly through the chaos and emerge thoroughly soaked and ready to take on the world!  This is the ultimate thrill ride!  To add to the excitement, you might see people flying over your head on the brand new ziplines!

After all that, believe it or not, we're still not done!  We'll have time for a quick paddle high-5, then we dodge "Bone-Breaker Falls", get a big splash in the hole beside the towering Nonosabasut Rock, and plunge into the truly epic standing wave know as the "Virgin Wave".  This last feature is a monster!  Hold on tight!  Before calling it quits, we can do a similar trick as we did at the Mill Rapids, and re-enter the Virgin Wave for one final crazy ride before starting the quiet float to Gorge Park.

Although there are no thrills to be had for the last 1km (0.6 miles) this section of the river is swift moving and quite deep, so you might as well jump off the raft and enjoy the float back.  Let your heart slow down and catch your breath after the incredible adventure you just experienced!  Timmy, our Canyon bus, will be waiting to whisk you back to the Salmonid Interpretation Centre so you can dry off and get changed.  Worth mentioning that the River's Edge Grill at the Salmonid Centre has a licensed patio, so if you need something stronger after your adventure you can enjoy a drink on the deck overlooking the Grand Falls.

Make sure you visit the Salmonid Centre while you're there, we'll even pay for your admission!

Looking for an even BIGGER thrill??

The Exploits Canyon offers thrilling, but safe rapids (or at least safe with our equipment and our guides), so this is the perfect place to really conquer your fears and amp up your adventure!  We have three additional options to really maximize the excitement on the Canyon!

  1. Canyon High-Adventure - Exact same run as our Canyon Adventure described above, but with a very different approach.  In our normal "Adventure" run, our guides do their best to keep you in the raft and try to ensure the raft does not flip.  For the Canyon High-Adventure trip, we do the opposite!  The raft WILL flip!  You WILL fall out! The guide will keep the excitement dialed to the max the entire trip!  At certain water levels we'll even run a bonus rapid!  That not exciting enough?  Did I mention that the High-Adventure run begins with a 4.5m (15') cliff jump?  When we say high-adventure, we mean high-adventure!

  2. Canyon Extreme-Adventure - Ready to take things up another notch?!  Our Extreme Adventure is the same run as our High-Adventure but instead of using our super stable 8-person rafts, we use a sporty 4-person raft that is half the size and twice as likely to flip!

  3. Canyon Sportyaks - Ready to leave the rafts behind all-together and brave Exploits Canyon in a kayak?  This is the run for you!  Instead of a guided raft, you will instead be in a 2-person whitewater inflatable kayak (sportyak).  It doesn't take much imagination to understand why this would be the ultimate thrill!
