Trip Details

Our Badger Chute adventures begin at our Badger Chute Office at the Riverfront Chalets Resort.  After registering you'll be equipped with all your needed safety gear and an optional wetsuit (no additional fee).  The Exploits River is quite cool until early July, but tends to warm up to ~21C (70F) through to mid-September.  While the wetsuit is completely optional, on cooler days you will be happy to have it!

After you're all geared up you'll be boarding our shuttle bus "Anubis" (every great ship needs a name) and traveling 10km to the historic town of Badger.  While on the bus, our guides will review some important safety information and make sure everyone is prepared for an awesome day on the river.  Be prepared for some terrible jokes though!

Just a quick note on accessibility.  "Anubis" is not wheelchair accessible, however the rest of the Badger Chute adventure can be mostly accessible.  On the river, we can accommodate guests with serious mobility issues (including paraplegia) providing they have good control of their upper body.

Finally we arrive at the Exploits River, a Canadian Heritage River which is the highest-volume and longest river on the island of Newfoundland.  The Exploits River was a critical route for the Beothuk indigenous people for thousands of years, and it's important that we treat the river, and the surrounding land, with the utmost respect and reverence.  No better way to appreciate this natural wonder than from atop a raft, so let's get started!

After leaving Badger we have 1.5km (0.9miles) of flatwater before our first rapid.  During this time your guide will teach you everything you need to know about rafting!  By the time your guide is done with you, you will be a paddling master!  Our first rapid is known as the "Honey Badger" and, when the water level is right, this unassuming surf wave can really be exciting!  It's a great safe introduction to whitewater to help prepare you for the bigger rapids to come.

After our introduction to whitewater, we have another 4km (2.5 miles) of flatwater that is mostly deeper and great for swimming!  In this stretch we break out our water cannons, play games, and spend a lot of time in the water floating along side the rafts.  Of course you could stay dry on the raft... but what fun is that??  When we see the legendary "Two-Toned Cliff" it's time to get back in the boat and prepare for the most exciting part of the trip!

The next 2km (1.25 miles) feature safe but incredibly exciting and fun rapids!  You can hear the rumble of the "Badger Chute" a full kilometer before you can see it, which helps build the excitement for the adventure to come.  After a few smaller rapids including "Splooshy-Splash" and "Baby Steps" we dive right into the famous "Exploits Steps" which feature a continuous train of huge safe waves that get everyone on the boat thoroughly soaked!  Kids especially love the Steps!  Lots of screams and laughter for sure!  After a quick paddle high-5, it's time for the namesake rapid, the "Badger Chute".  The Badger Chute features a 2m (6.5') high slide into a huge standing wave.  If you're not wet yet, you certainly will be now! This exciting but super safe feature creates some of the best pictures on the trip, so make sure to smile for the camera!

The "Badger Chute" is just too spectacular of a rapid to fly past, so we'll spend some time here to explore it more.  You'll have an opportunity to get out on shore to explore and get a close up look of the raging waters.  Your guides will have a light snack available for you if you're hungry.  One of the highlights of the trip is the optional "Badger Chute" swim - that's right, you can safely swim this monster of a rapid!  After a detailed safety briefing, you will be shown where to enter the rapid.  You can jump in if you're brave (or slide in if you are less brave) and immediately feel the power of the river as it rockets you downstream to where our guides will be waiting for you.  On a hot day, we'll often hang out here for quite awhile - I mean, where else can you safely jump into a raging rapid?!

Time to hop back on the rafts, but still not time to say goodbye to the "Badger Chute".  When the water levels allow it, there are two additional amazing surfing rapids adjacent to the chute: "Just the Tip" and "All the Way".  If you dried out on shore, "All the Way" will ensure that you get properly soaked once again!  As we leave the "Badger Chute" behind, don't be sad, as we're about to hit our most popular rapids, the "50/50" and "Rose's Roost".  These truly epic surf waves toss around the rafts and give paddlers the experience of being at a rodeo.  Sound too intense for you?  No worries!  You can watch all the action from a beautiful rock island in the middle of the river.

On our full trip, this is where we have our meal.  You can take a break from surfing and have yourself a great feed while relaxing on the beautiful island.  There is loads of fun to be had on the island as we have a river board and even some hilarious pool floaties that you can run through the surf waves!  Stay as long as you want, it's your trip!  Before leaving the island, you are welcome to toss on a dry layer or put on a provided jacket if you are a bit chilly.  From this point forward getting wet is optional.

Although the rapids are done, the fun is definitely not!  The final 4.5km (2.8 mile) float back to the Riverfront Chalets Resort is a serenely beautiful stretch that features great swimming opportunities, or an awesome excuse to just relax, dry out, and take in the wonders of the Exploits Valley.  For those who are ready for one last adventure in the water, there is an optional quest to mount "Challenge Rock" and seize the flag.  Do you have what it takes to defeat "Challenge Rock"?  Those that reach the flag will get a special crest to celebrate their achievement!

After an amazing day we finally return to the Riverfront Chalets Resort.  Here your dry clothes and towel will be waiting for you.  We have changerooms and washrooms on site - if you are lucky enough to have a chalet booked, you can head straight to the hot tub!  After you dry off you can check out the pictures and videos the guides took during your adventure - we'll have them playing on the big screen!  We generally have well over 100 pictures per raft!  Pictures are available to download for a small fee.

Night Rafting on the Badger Chute

For a truly unique rafting experience, try our night white water rafting adventure! We hit all the same awesome rapids that we do on our traditional trip, but as we clear the "Badger Chute" the sun will be setting behind us for a truly spectacular sight. We'll spend some time surfing the Roost and the infamous 50/50 rapid in the dying sunlight before drying off on a beautiful rock island around a campfire.

Nothing like hot chocolate and fire roasted marshmallows while waiting on the sausages grilling on the BBQ! Once the sun retires and the moon and stars grace the sky we'll bring out our telescope for some amazing star and planet gazing without any light pollution to interfere.

The return to the Raft Shack will be lit solely by the light of the moon. It's tough to put into words how beautiful the river is at night, but we promise it's an experience you will never forget!

Our Full Moon rafting adventure is weather dependent, so full refunds will be issued in the event of heavy rain. On cloudy days we'll skip the stargazing of course, but the rest of the experience will still be well worth it! Trip is ideal for adults, but mature kids are welcome.
